Auto Manufacturers Join Together to Standardize Electric Vehicle Charging System

Auto manufacturers have actually joined together to standardize a charging port for their electric vehicles in the US and Europe.  The port is designed by SAE and is compatible with the previous generation J1772 charging units. The new charging system features high-speed charging options for both AC & DC. They are looking to put “Ultra-fast” DC charging stations at public locations throughout the country, which are supposed to be able to charge your electric vehicle in 15-20 minutes.

All of this is interesting, to say the least. It kind of reminds me of the bizarre Toyota concept video or the car scene from I, Robot.

Current auto companies supporting the new charging standard:

  • GM
  • Ford
  • BMW
  • Audi
  • Tesla
  • Porsche
  • Volkswagen
  • Chrysler
