This Text Message Crashes iPhones

A few hours ago, a post on Reddit indicated that a simple text message containing a string of characters would cause iPhones to immediately lock up and crash. The message tries to display in the notification bar as well as in iMessage, but cannot load in properly causing the phone to respring and reboot. In addition to iMessage, this is also impacting other messaging services on the iPhone, including WhatsApp. This bug is currently being investigated by Apple, who commented “We are aware of an iMessage issue caused by a specific series of unicode characters and we will make a fix available in a software update.”

If you get one of these messages and cannot get into iMessage to delete it, the quick remedy is to send yourself a text message from another phone or launch Siri.
