Play Mass Effect 2 on Your Browser with Gaikai

You may remember Gaikai, one of the companies working on streaming PC games so you can play them on almost any computer with high-speed internet. They currently have a 90-minute demo of Mass Effect 2 that you can play right in your browser.

The game itself loads pretty well and the gameplay is reasonably smooth. I had a chance to play it on a laptop with an integrated video card and it played almost as well. Essentially, it streams the video and audio of the game and your commands are relayed back to the server hosting the game to control options. All of this is being handled through Flash and Java to create a seamless browser-friendly experience. My game was slightly laggy, but for something that’s running through a browser, it was quite an impressive accomplishment. It looks like the game is running at 1280 x 720 – but its difficult to tell if it is being stretched at all while in fullscreen mode. It did reconfigure the screen resolution in fullscreen mode, rather than using the native screen resolution that other flash applications, such as YouTube, use.
